When we think about public policies, it comes to mind political negotiations and complex laws. Rarely, do we consider how these policies make us feel. Whether it’s pride in climate action, fear about immigration, or frustration with fiscal policy, emotions matter as they influence how we make decisions about and engage with politics.

To shed light on how European citizens feel about European Union policies, MORES has launched a crowdsourcing activity. Coordinated by consortium partners European Citizen Action Service (ECAS) and European University Institute (EUI) in collaboration with MORES partners, the activity aims to assess how citizens engage with policies emotionally.

As MORES argues, communicating policies with technocratic, impersonal language can create a void between politicians and citizens, which can lead to political and societal divisions. According to Elisa Lironi, MORES team member at ECAS and one of the coordinators of the MORES crowdsourcing, the survey is an important step towards bridging this gap—the project is to formulate EU-wide policy recommendations based on innovative research and evidence.

“By analysing citizen opinions, we aim to provide actionable insights that help EU policies better align with the emotional experiences and expectations of Europeans,” Lironi, who is also ECAS’s Deputy Executive Director, says.

Crowdsourcing: How Does it Work?

What the MORES project seeks to understand from citizens:

  • Do current EU policies align with your emotional needs and concerns?
  • What feelings do they spark in you—hope, anger, fear, pride?
  • And how do those feelings shape your opinions and decisions?

To explore these questions, we’re inviting society to engage in our crowdsourcing activity. This survey covers five major European Union policy areas:

  • The war between Russia and Ukraine
  • Fiscal policy
  • Immigration policy
  • Climate policy
  • Food safety policy

The activity takes a few minutes to complete, and your inputs will help provide evidence-based insights into emotions and politics across Europe and support future policy recommendations from MORES.
