ABOUT

Discover MORES, an innovative research project exploring how moral emotions in politics unite and divide society. Learn how research fosters dialogue, builds trust in democracy, and enhances policy.

What is Mores

MORES is an innovative research project that addresses the challenges faced by liberal democracy, particularly concerning the role of moral emotions, values, and identities in politics. The research and innovation project aims to counter both the detachment of citizens from politics and the overemotionalisation of political debates, recognising the threats these phenomena pose to democratic principles. Supported by the Horizon Europe framework programme, MORES is a collaborative effort among nine European institutions, scheduled to run until the end of 2026.

Why was the MORES research initiated?

MORES research was initiated to address the need for a balanced approach to political engagement. When citizens disconnect from politics, they miss opportunities to participate in important decision-making processes. Additionally, when politicians overly emotionalise debates, it can result in polarisation and obstruct constructive dialogue. Driven by scientific understanding, MORES advocates for a balanced approach to foster constructive political engagement.

WHAT are the objectives of MORES?

MORES aims to achieve several key objectives:

  1. Empirical Insight: The project seeks to create scientific evidence on how moral emotions shape political identities. By understanding this connection, MORES aims to harness the potential of moral emotions to unite citizens towards democratic causes.
  2. Better Policymaking: MORES conducts several research tasks to reveal the impact of moral emotions on society. This new insight empowers policymakers to make informed decisions that strengthen European values and foster trust in governance.
WHAT will MORES deliver?

MORES will deliver a set of innovative, free tools including:

  • Tools to help policymakers understand and respond to citizens’ emotional needs.
  • Strategies to help citizens defend themselves against political extremists.
  • Knowledge resources for civil society organisations to support citizens' rights and promote democratic values.
